A Simple Piece of Paper

A Simple Piece of Paper

"BAM....BAM....BAM!!!"

Immediately, my heart starts beating like an overexcited hummingbird at the sight of a thick-jawed correctional officer staring sternly at me through the stained glass window of my prison cell door.

Now, for those of you who have never experienced the absolute JOY of having a correctional officer unexpectedly pound on your cell door...

Let me assure you...

It is NOT exactly the same feeling as having your friendly neighborhood Amazon delivery driver show up with a surprise package.

My mind immediately begins racing through approximately seventeen different scenarios, NONE of which involve anything particularly pleasant.

Correctional Officer: "Are you Bartlett???"

Me: "Yes, sir."

Correctional Officer: "Here....this is yours. Congratulations. Keep up the great work."

As my wide, slightly terrified eyes slowly make their way down to the calloused hands of the stocky correctional officer...

That's when I see it.

A simple piece of paper.

An OFFICIAL graduation certificate with my name printed across the front.

It reads:

"This is to certify that....

BRETT BARTLETT

Has completed an apprenticeship for the occupation of....

ANIMAL TRAINER."

For a moment, I just stand there.

Staring.

Trying to process what I'm holding.

The correctional officer gives me a quick nod, and I somehow manage to politely thank him for personally delivering my official dog training apprenticeship graduation certificate.

He walks away.

The door closes.

And suddenly...

There I am.

Standing alone inside my federal prison cell, holding a piece of paper I never imagined I would earn.

A warm wave of emotions begins working its way through my chest.

Pride.

Disbelief.

Gratitude.

Relief.

And something much deeper that I still struggle to put into words.

I slowly make my way over to my wobbly plastic prison chair, sit down, and stare at that certificate again.

BRETT BARTLETT.

ANIMAL TRAINER.

And then...

I absolutely LOSE IT.

I'm talking about a grown man sitting in a plastic chair inside a federal prison cell, sobbing WAY too loudly over a certificate that was probably printed somewhere in a prison basement.

Not exactly the glamorous graduation ceremony most people envision.

No cap.

No gown.

No proud family cheering from the audience.

No wife wrapping her arms around my neck.

No four beautiful children jumping up and down because Daddy graduated.

Just me.

A wobbly chair.

Four concrete walls.

And a simple piece of paper.

BUT OH MY GOODNESS....WHAT THAT PAPER REPRESENTS!!!

You see, there was a time in my life when I never could have imagined that I would find myself sitting inside a federal prison cell.

There was a time when I thought I had my life figured out.

When I was making plans, building businesses, dreaming about our family's future, and convincing myself that I knew exactly where I was going.

And then...

Life came crashing down.

Not because I was some innocent bystander who happened to get caught in an unfortunate situation.

No.

I MADE MISTAKES.

Real mistakes.

Serious mistakes.

Decisions that hurt people.

Decisions that hurt my family.

Decisions that ultimately led me to a place where I had to say goodbye to my beautiful wife, Noél, and our four precious children before surrendering myself to federal prison.

And let me tell you something...

There is NOTHING quite like the weight of knowing that the people you love most in this world are carrying consequences for decisions YOU made.

That is a difficult reality to live with.

And there have been moments during this prison journey when the shame, regret, and sadness have felt almost unbearable.

Moments when I have wondered how in the world God could possibly make something beautiful out of such a shattered story.

BUT THEN GOD....

Oh, my friends.

BUT THEN GOD!!!

Somehow...

Someway...

In a place surrounded by razor-sharp barbed wire, concrete walls, locked doors, and men carrying their own heartbreaking stories...

God began showing me that my life was NOT over.

That my failures were NOT my identity.

That the worst decisions I ever made did NOT have to become the final chapter of my story.

And perhaps most importantly...

That I still had something meaningful to offer this world.

I cannot adequately describe the DIVINE LOVE and GRACE I have experienced while living life behind these prison fences.

Because here's the thing...

God did not magically erase the consequences of my decisions.

He did not suddenly open the prison gates and tell me I could go home.

He did not remove the heartache of being separated from Noél, Cambria, Willow, Lula, and Zion.

HOWEVER....

He began meeting me RIGHT HERE.

In the middle of the consequences.

In the middle of the brokenness.

In the middle of a season I never would have chosen for myself or my family.

And slowly, one day at a time, He started showing me that even here...

THERE IS PURPOSE.

When I was first given the opportunity to become involved with the prison's service dog training program, I had absolutely NO IDEA how profoundly those incredible animals would change my life.

What began as an opportunity to learn something new became an opportunity to love, serve, grow, and experience a kind of healing I didn't even realize I desperately needed.

These dogs have taught me more about patience, consistency, humility, responsibility, unconditional love, and second chances than I ever could have imagined.

They have given me a reason to wake up each morning excited about something meaningful.

They have reminded me that trust is something you EARN.

That progress requires showing up again and again.

That love is often demonstrated through the smallest, quietest, most consistent acts of service.

And that sometimes...

The most powerful way to heal your own broken heart is to help another living being feel safe, loved, and understood.

I have spent thousands of hours learning, studying, practicing, making mistakes, correcting those mistakes, and becoming a better trainer.

FOUR THOUSAND HOURS OF APPRENTICESHIP TRAINING!!!

And somewhere along the way...

Between early morning walks, training sessions, slobbery kisses, wagging tails, and the countless lessons these beautiful animals have taught me...

Something extraordinary happened.

I BECAME A DOG TRAINER.

ME!!!

BRETT BARTLETT!!!

A man serving a federal prison sentence.

A man who has made many, many, many, MANY mistakes.

A man who once wondered whether he would ever feel proud of himself again.

And now...

Here I am.

Holding an official certificate from the federal government recognizing that I successfully completed an apprenticeship in an entirely new occupation.

HOW IN THE WORLD DID THAT HAPPEN?!?!

I can tell you how.

GOD'S GRACE.

And the incredible generosity of the people who have continued believing that I am capable of becoming a better man.

Look...

I understand that to some people, this might seem a little silly.

It's just a certificate.

A piece of paper.

A document with my name on it.

There are people earning degrees, building companies, receiving promotions, and accomplishing extraordinary things all around the world.

So why in the world is a grown man sitting in a prison cell crying over an animal training apprenticeship certificate?

Because to me...

THIS IS SO MUCH MORE THAN A SIMPLE PIECE OF PAPER.

It is tangible proof that I did not waste this opportunity to change.

It represents thousands of hours when I chose to learn instead of give up.

It represents the mentors who took the time to teach me.

The dogs who trusted me.

The people who encouraged me.

The family who continued loving me.

And a Heavenly Father who never stopped reaching for me, even when I was drowning in the consequences of my own decisions.

YES....I AM A BROKEN MAN.

I have made mistakes I will regret for the rest of my life.

There are things I wish I could undo.

Conversations I wish I could have again.

Moments with my wife and children that I will NEVER get back.

And I will never pretend that a graduation certificate somehow makes all of that disappear.

BUT....

I am ALSO a cherished child of the Most High God.

A man who has felt his Heavenly Father's tender and welcoming embrace in one of the darkest seasons of his life.

A man who is learning that true redemption doesn't mean pretending the past never happened.

It means taking responsibility for the past while refusing to let it destroy the possibility of a beautiful future.

And that, my friends...

IS WORTH CELEBRATING!!!

I keep thinking about Noél and our four precious children.

About the sacrifices they have made.

About the countless ways my beautiful wife has carried our family through this incredibly difficult season.

About the birthdays, holidays, ordinary afternoons, bedtime hugs, and little moments that I have missed.

And I think about the promise I made to our oldest daughter, Cambria, before I surrendered to federal prison.

"I PROMISE TO MAKE YOU PROUD WHILE I'M IN PRISON."

Sweet girl...

I hope this simple piece of paper is another small reminder that Daddy is doing everything he can to keep that promise.

I cannot change where I am today.

But I CAN choose who I become while I'm here.

I can keep learning.

Keep growing.

Keep serving.

Keep taking responsibility.

Keep choosing humility over pride.

Keep working toward the day when I can look my wife and children in the eyes and know that I did everything possible to make this painful chapter count for something meaningful.

And one day...

When I'm finally back home with my forever people...

I hope this certificate will be hanging somewhere in our house.

Not because it is some prestigious award.

Not because becoming an animal trainer somehow erases my past.

But because I want our children to remember something important.

NO MATTER HOW BADLY LIFE FALLS APART....YOU CAN ALWAYS CHOOSE TO START BUILDING AGAIN.

You can choose to learn.

You can choose to grow.

You can choose to become better.

And with God's grace...

You can discover purpose in places you never imagined purpose could exist.

I also want to take a moment to thank every single person who has continued cheering our family forward throughout this prison journey.

Those of you who have prayed for us.

Written encouraging messages.

Supported Noél.

Loved our children.

Read these letters.

Celebrated the small victories.

And reminded us that our family is not forgotten.

PLEASE KNOW...

Your love and encouragement have made a difference in my life that I will NEVER be able to fully explain.

There have been difficult days when knowing that people still believe in me has given me the strength to keep putting one foot in front of the other.

And I am deeply, deeply grateful.

I promise to continue working hard to become worthy of the trust, love, and support you have so generously extended to me.

I WILL CONTINUE TO EARN....MY....WAY....BACK....HOME!!!

And before I finish this letter, I want to speak directly to someone who might be reading these words while carrying an unbearable amount of shame.

Maybe you've made mistakes.

Maybe you've hurt people you love.

Maybe you've lost something precious.

Maybe your life looks NOTHING like the life you once imagined.

Maybe you wake up every morning feeling like your worst decision has become your permanent identity.

My friend...

Please hear me.

YOUR STORY IS NOT OVER.

I don't know what consequences you're facing.

I don't know what relationships need healing.

I don't know how long the road ahead might be.

And I would never insult your pain by pretending that everything can be fixed overnight.

BUT I DO KNOW THIS....

You are NOT beyond the reach of God's grace.

You are NOT disqualified from doing something meaningful with the rest of your life.

You are NOT defined solely by the worst thing you've ever done.

Through the precious blood of Jesus Christ, there is forgiveness, redemption, and the possibility of becoming NEW.

And sometimes...

The first little glimpse of that new beginning arrives in the most unexpected package.

Maybe it's a conversation.

Maybe it's an opportunity.

Maybe it's the chance to help someone else.

Or maybe...

Just maybe...

It's a simple piece of paper delivered by a stern-looking correctional officer to a prison cell.

A piece of paper that reminds a broken man that he is still capable of accomplishing something beautiful.

A BIG, BRIGHT, AND BEAUTIFUL FUTURE AWAITS US, MY FRIENDS!!!

And this surreal prison journey continues to be a living, breathing testimony that...

LOVE....ALWAYS....WINS!!!

With so much LOVE & GRATITUDE,

Brett Bartlett

(A broken man who somehow became a certified dog trainer inside federal prison...and who is still trying to figure out how a simple piece of paper made him cry harder than a grown man probably should.) 🐾

A Note From Noél

When I opened the tattered, slightly torn manila envelope that arrived in our mailbox and carefully pulled out Brett's crisp white graduation certificate...

I ABOUT LOST IT!!!

There it was.

My husband's name.

Printed on an OFFICIAL graduation certificate recognizing that he had successfully completed his apprenticeship as an...

ANIMAL TRAINER!!!

And I just stood there.

Holding this simple piece of paper.

Trying to wrap my heart around what it actually represented.

Because to someone else, it might just look like another certificate.

A piece of paper with a name, an accomplishment, and a signature.

But to me?

OH MY GOODNESS....IT REPRESENTS SO MUCH MORE!!!

It represents a husband who has made mistakes, accepted responsibility for those mistakes, and made the conscious decision that he was NOT going to allow his federal prison sentence to become wasted years of his life.

It represents thousands of hours of learning, training, studying, growing, and showing up when it would have been so much easier to simply count down the days until he could come home.

It represents a man who has had to confront some of the hardest truths about himself while simultaneously being separated from the people he loves most in this world.

And it represents something I have prayed for over and over again throughout this incredibly painful season...

PURPOSE.

Because here's the thing...

When Brett first entered federal prison, I had absolutely NO IDEA what this journey was going to look like.

I didn't know how we were going to navigate raising our four beautiful children with their daddy nearly 2,000 miles away.

I didn't know how I was going to carry the emotional, financial, and everyday responsibilities of our family without my best friend physically beside me.

I didn't know how we would survive the birthdays, holidays, school milestones, bedtime tears, and ordinary little moments that suddenly felt so much heavier without him here.

And if I'm being completely transparent...

There have been days when I genuinely wondered how much more my heart could take.

THIS HAS BEEN HARD.

Not the kind of hard that looks inspiring in a pretty photograph or sounds beautiful in a carefully written social media caption.

I'm talking about the kind of hard that brings you to your knees when nobody is watching.

The kind of hard that makes you cry in your car because you don't want your children to see how overwhelmed you are.

The kind of hard that forces you to keep getting up, keep working, keep mothering, keep loving, and keep believing when you feel like you have absolutely nothing left to give.

And through it all...

I have watched my husband fight his own battles on the other side of those prison fences.

Battles with regret.

With shame.

With missing his family.

With knowing that the choices he made helped create this incredibly painful chapter in our lives.

And yet...

I HAVE ALSO WATCHED HIM CHOOSE TO GROW.

Again.

And again.

And again.

Not perfectly.

Not without difficult days.

But intentionally.

He has continued looking for ways to learn, serve, become more disciplined, and make something meaningful out of a situation neither of us ever imagined our family would face.

And then...

Somewhere along the way...

GOD SENT THE DOGS. 🐾

Oh, how I wish I could adequately explain what these precious animals have meant to my husband.

Conrad.

Finn.

And now our sweet little Princess Roxy.

These beautiful, four-legged blessings have brought companionship, responsibility, laughter, tenderness, and so much unexpected JOY into a place where joy can sometimes feel impossibly far away.

They have given Brett something to care for.

Something to work toward.

Something to wake up excited about.

And perhaps most beautifully...

They have given him the opportunity to pour his enormous heart into helping another living being prepare for a life of service.

Because that's what makes this story even more extraordinary to me.

While Brett has been working so hard to train these dogs to someday change someone else's life...

THESE DOGS HAVE BEEN CHANGING HIS.

They have taught him patience.

Consistency.

Gentleness.

Trust.

The importance of showing up every single day, even when progress feels painfully slow.

And I cannot help but see God's fingerprints all over it.

BUT THEN GOD....

Isn't that just like Him?

To take one of the most heartbreaking chapters of our family's life and begin planting little seeds of purpose in the most unexpected places?

To place guardian angels with wagging tails behind razor-sharp barbed wire?

To use a prison dog training program to help a brokenhearted husband and father rediscover his confidence, his compassion, and perhaps even his TRUE CALLING?

Never in a MILLION years would I have imagined that my husband would become a certified dog trainer while serving a federal prison sentence.

Never.

And yet here we are.

FOUR THOUSAND HOURS OF APPRENTICESHIP TRAINING LATER...

And my husband has an entirely new skill, an official certificate, and a renewed sense of purpose that he can carry with him long after this prison chapter ends.

I am SO incredibly proud of him.

Not simply because he earned a certificate.

But because of the man I have watched him become while earning it.

And I keep thinking about our children.

Cambria, Willow, Lula, and Zion.

Our four precious babies who have sacrificed so much throughout this journey.

They deserve to have their daddy home.

They deserve his hugs, his laughter, his bedtime stories, his silly jokes, and his physical presence in their everyday lives.

A graduation certificate doesn't replace any of that.

BUT....

What an extraordinary gift it is for our children to see that even when life takes a devastating turn, their daddy is choosing to do something meaningful with the time he has been given.

That he is refusing to surrender to shame.

That he is continuing to work toward becoming the husband, father, and man God created him to be.

And that the future of our family can still hold something...

BIG, BRIGHT, AND BEAUTIFUL!!!

I also can't help but think about the promise Brett made to Cambria before he surrendered.

"I PROMISE TO MAKE YOU PROUD WHILE I'M IN PRISON."

Oh my incredible girl...

I hope you know how seriously your daddy has taken those words.

Because this certificate is another little piece of evidence that he has been working hard to keep that promise.

And I pray that one day, when all four of our children are older and can fully understand this chapter of our family's story, they will look back and recognize something incredibly powerful.

That their parents walked through a season that nearly broke them...

BUT THEY DID NOT STOP BELIEVING IN REDEMPTION.

They did not stop loving.

They did not stop fighting for their family.

And they did not stop trusting that God could somehow weave even the most shattered pieces of their story into something beautiful.

Because that's what I believe with my whole heart.

Our God is not intimidated by brokenness.

He is not afraid of complicated stories.

He does not turn away from His children simply because they have made mistakes.

And while His grace does not erase the consequences of our choices, it can absolutely transform what we choose to do next.

THAT IS THE GOD WE SERVE!!!

And if you're reading this today while walking through your own season of shame, regret, disappointment, or heartbreak...

I want you to hear something from a wife who has watched God work in some of the most unexpected circumstances imaginable.

YOUR STORY IS NOT OVER.

I don't know what you're carrying.

I don't know what you've lost.

I don't know what decisions you wish you could take back or what parts of your life feel impossible to repair.

But I do know that there is hope beyond your hardest chapter.

There is purpose beyond your mistakes.

And there is a Heavenly Father who loves you far too much to define your entire existence by the worst season you've ever walked through.

Sometimes redemption doesn't arrive in one enormous, life-changing moment.

Sometimes it happens quietly.

One choice.

One prayer.

One act of obedience.

One tiny step forward at a time.

And sometimes...

It shows up in your mailbox as a slightly wrinkled envelope containing a simple white piece of paper.

A piece of paper that reminds you...

GOD IS STILL WRITING THE STORY.

To everyone who has continued following our family's journey, praying for us, encouraging us, supporting our children, and celebrating these little victories alongside us...

THANK YOU.

Truly.

From the deepest parts of my heart.

You have no idea how much your love and encouragement have meant to our family during a season when we have needed both more than ever.

There are moments when this journey has felt incredibly lonely.

And then one of you sends a message, says a prayer, shares an encouraging word, or reminds us that you're still cheering us forward.

And suddenly...

We feel a little less alone.

A little more hopeful.

A little stronger.

You have helped remind us that our story is about so much more than the mistakes that brought us here.

It's about what God is doing with the pieces now.

And I cannot WAIT to see what He has planned next.

THANK YOU, LORD JESUS...

For loving my husband through his brokenness.

For giving him the courage to take responsibility for his past while continuing to work toward a better future.

For the people who have mentored and encouraged him.

For every opportunity to learn, grow, and serve.

And especially...

For those precious guardian angels with tails who somehow found their way into his prison journey and helped him rediscover something beautiful inside himself.

Cambria, Willow, Lula, Zion, and I are forever grateful.

MY HUSBAND IS OFFICIALLY A CERTIFIED DOG TRAINER!!!

And I am one VERY, VERY PROUD WIFE.

Our family's one-of-a-kind prison journey continues to be a living, breathing testimony that...

LOVE....ALWAYS....WINS!!!

With so much LOVE & GRATITUDE,

Noél

(The incredibly PROUD wife of a CERTIFIED DOG TRAINER...who never imagined she'd be celebrating her husband's graduation from a prison dog training apprenticeship, but who wouldn't trade witnessing God's redemption in his life for anything.) 💛

P.S. PLEASE SCROLL DOWN!!! 🐾

I'm sharing a picture of the ACTUAL graduation certificate Brett received from that thick-jawed correctional officer who unexpectedly showed up at his prison cell door!

I hope you'll take a moment to look at it and celebrate this accomplishment with us.

Because while it might look like a simple piece of paper...

To our family, it represents 4,000 hours of hard work, countless answered prayers, a renewed sense of purpose, and the beautiful reminder that God is not finished with our story.

Thank you for cheering our family forward and celebrating this milestone with Brett, me, Cambria, Willow, Lula, and Zion.

I am truly in AWE of what God continues to do during this surreal season of our lives.

WE LOVE YOU!!! 💛

Shatter Your Shame- Sneak Peek

Shatter Your Shame, Chapter 1

Shatter Your Shame, Chapter 2

Shatter Your Shame, Chapter 3

Shatter Your Shame is NOW AVAILABLE

Brett and I are so excited (and honestly still a little in awe) to officially announce

Shatter Your Shame is LIVE on the site.

This book was written inside a federal prison—on random pieces of scratch paper, with a dull pencil, behind razor-sharp barbed wire and an electrified fence. What started as handwritten prison letters has turned into a powerful testimony of redemption, responsibility, faith, and purpose.

Shatter Your Shame is for anyone who carries the weight of their past, the burden of regret, or the quiet pain of shame—and is ready to see how God redeems what the world calls broken.

Brett writes with raw honesty about the worst decisions of his life, the consequences that followed, and the miraculous way God met him in the pit of prison and transformed his shame into purpose. These are one-of-a-kind prison stories that will help you heal, rise, and walk forward unchained.

(Perfect for small groups, book clubs, churches, or gifting to someone who needs hope.)

Every order directly supports me and my 4 beautiful children during this season Brett is away.

This journey hasn’t been easy. Prison is heavy. Shame is heavy. But God is proving—once again—that He specializes in turning massive messes into healing miracles.

Thank you for believing in redemption.
Thank you for supporting our family.
Thank you for helping us share this message with the world.

With so much love,
Noél
