Me: "Finn.......BUTTON!!!"

Mr. Finn:

With his BIG FLOPPY BLACK EARS bouncing up and down, eagerly trots over to the practice button securely mounted to the tan wall inside our prison puppy training room and confidently pushes it with his wet and squishy black nose.

The moment The Fantastic Mr. Finn bops the mounted button...
a bright blue neon light instantly illuminates the room.

That glowing blue light signals another successful "BUTTON" attempt, and almost immediately my furry friend flashes one of his signature ear-to-ear smiles.

He is one PROUD PUP.

And I'm one grateful trainer who continues to stand in awe of this special doggo's God-given gifts.

Teaching Finn "BUTTON" and watching his sincere smile take over his face after every successful attempt has become one of my greatest pleasures on this purpose-filled prison journey.

I think it's safe to say my dear friend Finn's defining characteristic isn't his intelligence...
or his incredible work ethic...
or even his remarkable ability to master complicated service dog skills.

No...

it's his CONTAGIOUS & COURAGEOUS smile.

I've personally witnessed that big, bright, beautiful, tooth-filled grin melt the hearts of some of the roughest, toughest, and most intimidating prisoners walking around this concrete compound.

Men who rarely smile...
find themselves smiling back.

Men who have forgotten what joy feels like...
suddenly remember.

Finn's smile has this supernatural ability to reach places words never could.

It comforts souls suffocating beneath pain.
It softens hearts buried under shame.
It breathes hope into people convinced their best days are behind them.

Right now...
somewhere out in the free world...
Finn's forever person is hurting.

She's carrying burdens no one else can see.
She's praying prayers soaked in tears.
She's wondering if life will ever feel normal again.

And she has absolutely no idea...
that God is preparing a miracle with four paws...
big floppy black ears...
and a smile capable of changing the atmosphere of an entire room.

Sometimes while we're practicing "BUTTON" inside our little prison puppy training room...
my mind quietly drifts away.

I begin imagining Finn living everyday life beside his forever person.

I picture him wearing his bright red service dog cape while faithfully standing beside HIS GIRL as they approach a building together.

In front of them stands a heavy door.

One of those impossible doors that seems so ordinary to most people...
but feels overwhelming when you're navigating life from a wheelchair.

She smiles down at her best friend and softly whispers...

"BUTTON."

Immediately...

The Fantastic Mr. Finn's big floppy black ears begin bouncing with excitement.

He confidently trots over to the handicap button he has practiced pushing a thousand times inside a federal prison.

With one gentle nudge of his wet, squishy nose...

CLICK.

The blue button lights up.

The heavy doors slowly swing wide open.

But here's what I love most about that moment...
Finn didn't just open a door.

He opened a possibility.
He opened an adventure.
He opened a memory waiting to be made.
He opened a future that once felt impossible.

Then...

just before they roll through those open doors together...

Finn looks up at his forever girl and flashes that same courageous, contagious smile I've watched brighten the darkest corners of prison.

She smiles right back through grateful tears...

whispers,

"Thank you, buddy."

And together...

they roll forward.

Side by side.

Exactly as God always intended.

You know...
the more I think about it...
maybe we're all standing in front of doors that feel impossible to open.

Doors labeled...

Hope.
Forgiveness.
Healing.
Freedom.
Second Chances.
Purpose.

Sometimes we spend so much time staring at the closed door...
we forget our Heavenly Father already has a way to open it.

Finn...

I truly mean it when I say I'm honored to be part of your superhero service dog story.

You, my friend, are a guardian angel with a tail.

A divine destiny awaits you.

Thank you for teaching me that sometimes the greatest miracle isn't opening a door...

It's giving someone the courage to walk through it.

Thank you for reminding me that one smile...

one act of service...

one simple act of unconditional love...

can completely change someone's life.

You, Finn...

are a Living, Breathing Testimony that...

A Note From Noél

This past week, Cambria, Willow, Lula, Zion, and I received a VERY special letter in the mail from Brett.

And...

Tucked inside that heartfelt handwritten letter were some of the sweetest little surprises...

A whole stack of ADORABLE puppy pictures of Mr. Finn and his precious family.

The moment we pulled them out, the kids gathered around the table, smiling from ear to ear as we admired every tiny squishy face, every floppy ear, and every little puppy yawn. It was one of those simple moments that filled our home with so much joy.

I don't know about you...
but these puppy pictures have caused my heart to overflow with immense gratitude.

Because when I look into those tiny faces, I don't just see adorable puppies.

I see redemption.
I see the fingerprints of a faithful God.

I see a Heavenly Father who has taken one of the most painful and unexpected chapters of our lives and woven purpose into every single part of it.

If you had told me a few years ago that one of the greatest ministries to come from our family's prison journey would involve service dogs, I never would have believed you.

Yet here we are.

Every single day, Brett gets the incredible privilege of helping prepare dogs like Finn for the people God has already chosen for them.

People who are praying for hope.
Praying for healing.
Praying for greater independence.
Praying for the strength to simply walk through another day.

What amazes me most is that while Brett is helping prepare these dogs for their future families...

God has been preparing Brett, too.

These guardian angels with tails have patiently loved him, challenged him, and reminded him that his story isn't over.

They've helped restore confidence where shame once lived.
They've given him purpose on days that could have easily felt hopeless.
And they've become one of the many ways God has gently whispered,

"I'm not finished with you yet."

I truly believe that's what our God does.

He doesn't waste our pain.
He doesn't abandon us in our hardest seasons.

Instead, He has this incredible way of taking what the enemy intended for destruction and transforming it into something beautiful that brings hope to countless others.

Watching Brett become a certified service dog trainer has been one of the greatest privileges of my life.

Not because he gets to train amazing dogs...

But because I've watched God train him.

To trust deeper.
To love more freely.
To serve more selflessly.
And to become more like Jesus in the process.

That is the miracle I see every time another picture of Finn shows up in our mailbox.

Brett's one-of-a-kind journey to becoming a certified service dog trainer is a living, breathing testimony that our God is still in the business of redemption.

He is still restoring.
He is still healing.
He is still opening doors.
And He is still writing stories that only He could write.
