On October 6, 2022, my precious three-year-old daughter, Lula, was viciously attacked by a family member’s dog.
The searing scream Lula made when that dog bit the left side of her face is forever burned into my memory. Even writing about this moment now makes me feel sick to my stomach inside my prison cell. I hate having to relive that memory—but it is part of my story.
I can still see the streams of blood pouring down my little princess’s face as I carried her trembling body up the stairs. Noel took one look and knew immediately we had to call 911. Lula’s blood covered the bathroom floor by the time the firefighters, paramedics, and ambulance arrived. They debated whether she needed to be airlifted or taken by ambulance.
They ultimately chose the ambulance. I climbed into the back with my brave little girl. Lula and I held hands as we raced to the hospital. She was smiling and joking the entire time. My daughter is one of the bravest, strongest, most loving human beings you will ever meet.
I, on the other hand, was falling apart inside. On the outside, I told her everything would be okay. But internally, I was completely consumed by fear and darkness. Lula’s face was swelling more by the second, and I didn’t know if she would ever see out of her left eye again. Dark red blood was slowly leaking from her eyeball, and she could no longer open her eyelid. Every worst-case scenario raced through my mind as we pulled up to the hospital.
Once inside, multiple doctors told us Lula needed plastic surgery on her face and emergency surgery on her left eye. The look on each surgeon’s face sent pain pulsing through my entire body. As a parent, not being able to protect or heal your hurting child is one of the most gut-wrenching feelings imaginable.
The night before surgery, Lula sat in her hospital bed smiling, laughing, and eating her favorite Chick-fil-A chicken noodle soup. (That girl has always loved her chicken noodle soup!) I couldn’t stop staring at her. Her face was so swollen she was nearly unrecognizable. Dried blood covered her soft skin, and she couldn’t see out of her left eye at all. Doctors planned to sedate her in order to assess the full damage.
That night, just hours before surgery, I could feel my heart hardening. Hatred toward dogs and the pain “they” caused my family was rooting deep into my soul. In that moment, I swore no dog would ever harm my family again.
I had no idea that years later, inside a federal prison cell, God would send a four-legged angel into my life to rip those roots of bitterness and fear out of my heart.
That angel’s name was Conrad.
God used Conrad to heal every ounce of pain, hatred, and fear inside me.
“Lord, thank You for sending me to a federal prison with a dog program.
Thank You for aligning events in a way only You could.
Thank You for sending a big, fluffy guardian angel to pick me up when I was at my lowest.”
Mr. Conrad, my big brown-eyed friend—God used you to heal my heart.
What are the odds that I would be sent to one of the few federal prisons in America with a service dog training program? Only God.
Conrad, my furry friend, I am honored to be your Prison Puppy Trainer.
Soon, you will leave my life and go to your forever home. I already know there is a family out there who needs healing—just like my family did. You will rip out those dark roots again and show them the true meaning of unconditional love.
I don’t have the words to fully express my gratitude, Conrad. You brought a level of healing into my life I didn’t know was possible. You will always be the greatest friend I ever had in prison.
People often comment on the powerful bond between us. Trainers and staff are blown away by how naturally we work together. My fellow trainers even joke that I somehow learned to “speak dog.”
Honestly—they’re not wrong.
Conrad taught me that dogs do speak—they speak all the time. We humans just don’t understand the language. He also showed me that he wanted to listen to me—but most of the time, he had no idea what I was actually saying.
We spoke two different languages. He speaks Dog. I speak Human.
Conrad taught me how to become a better listener. Eventually, I learned how to communicate in a way he could understand—and that changed everything. Once we truly connected, his ability to learn skyrocketed. A dog everyone doubted could ever become a service dog is now the top of his class.
Because we learned how to communicate, we didn’t just train—we became a team.
We didn’t just coexist—we transformed together.
We didn’t just bond—we healed.
Learning to SPEAK DOG has been one of the greatest blessings of my life.
And it is now my mission to teach this to every dog owner in the world.
My dream is to give people the same breakthrough I had with Conrad—to teach them how to truly communicate with their dogs and unlock their dogs’ potential while transforming their own hearts as well.
That is why, from my prison cell, I am writing my first manuscript: SPEAK DOG. Every single page will be handwritten between lockdowns, counts, and chaos—because I believe the world needs it.
Mr. Conrad, in a few weeks you will leave my life, but your impact never will. This book is my way of saying thank you—of honoring the miracle God worked through you.
