Ok... before you meet my newest "barbed wire brother" known around the prison compound as "The Enforcer," I wanted to share a few of my favorite lash and brow transformations from the past couple of weeks. 💛

One of the things I've come to love most about this little lash and brow business is that it's taught me something beautiful:

People are so much more than what we first see.

Sometimes we see tired eyes...

but underneath is a woman who has been carrying the weight of the world for her family.

Sometimes we see messy brows...

but underneath is someone who hasn't taken a moment for herself in years.

Sometimes we see exhaustion...

but underneath is strength, resilience, beauty, and grace.

And honestly...

I think that's why Brett's newest letter touched my heart so deeply.

Because it's about a man everyone knows as "The Enforcer."

A man most people see through the lens of his reputation, his mistakes, and his past.

But Brett saw something different.

And more importantly...

God saw something different.

This little business has become one of God's sweetest gifts to our family during a very difficult season.

Every appointment, every referral, every share, and every encouraging message helps me provide for Cambria, Willow, Lula, and Zion while Brett serves his sentence.

The Enforcer

Peering intensely through my cracked and slightly tinted cell window just before our early afternoon chow call is a 6'3", 275-pound active black "group" member known around this concrete compound as...

"The Enforcer."

This young man with dark dreadlocks hanging down to his shoulders is one of the most feared felons roaming our crowded prison hallways.

He earned the nickname "The Enforcer" by physically ENFORCING the unwritten rules of prison life onto the unsuspecting bodies of any inmate who was "caught slipping."

If you are one of the unlucky souls that needs a physical reminder about the unwritten rules of prison it's only a matter of time before you might possibly see "The Enforcer's" menacing face staring straight at you through your slightly stained cell window.

And trust me...

that's not a visit most people are excited to receive.

LUCKILY...

My dear friend known throughout this concrete jungle as "The Enforcer" is NOT breathing heavily onto my cracked window today because he wants to administer a painful physical reminder onto my weak white-collar body.

NOPE...

This dedicated father of three young boys is standing outside my dented prison door because he is seeking something far more powerful than punishment.

He's looking for peace.
He's looking for rest.
He's looking for solitude.
He's looking for a place where he can safely process the daunting details of his past life out loud.

He's looking for what my barbwire brothers now affectionately call...

"The Sanctuary." (aka my concrete cell)

And somehow...

for reasons I'll never fully understand...

"The Enforcer" has decided my tiny prison cell is one of the few places where he feels safe enough to let his guard down.

I'm deeply honored by that trust.

Because behind the nickname...

behind the reputation...

behind the fear...

exists a human being carrying an enormous amount of pain.

For hours at a time, "The Enforcer" and I will sit shoulder to shoulder inside our sanctuary and unpack the complicated story of his life. It's a story filled with decades of scarring struggle, crushing poverty, abusive violence, heartbreaking loss, and an unrelenting fight for survival. The kind of story that would break most people. 

You see...

ever since "The Enforcer" can remember, the confused role models surrounding him screamed the same message into his hurting heart over and over again:

"If someone disrespects you... hurt them."

"If someone threatens you... strike first."

"If you want something in life... take it."

Violence wasn't just normalized in my friend's world.

It was survival.

Pain was passed down from one generation to the next like an unwanted family heirloom.

And before "The Enforcer" even had a chance to become his own man, he was already carrying decades worth of hurt, anger, disappointment, and fear on his broad shoulders.

The thing that breaks my heart most is that this LARGE & LOVING father never really had someone show him a different path.

Nobody sat him down and taught him what healthy looked like.
Nobody showed him how to process pain without inflicting pain.
Nobody showed him that strength and gentleness could coexist in the same human heart.

BUT...

There has been so much DIVINE transformation taking place deep inside "The Enforcer's" heart while serving his lengthy prison sentence.

My barbwire brother is absolutely dedicated to PROVING he is more than his complicated past and criminal charges.

More than his mistakes.
More than the worst decisions he's ever made.
More than the labels attached to his name.

-He yearns to become THE DAD his sons deserve and BREAK the generational cycles of imprisonment that have plagued their family tree for decades.

-He wants his boys to inherit hope instead of hurt, wisdom instead of violence, and purpose instead of prison.

-He is truly one of the funniest dudes I've ever had the privilege of sharing life stories with. His one-of-a-kind sense of humor has me belly laughing until my cheeks hurt on a daily basis.

-He's brutally honest and completely transparent about the mistakes he made as a young man. In my humble opinion, all of us could learn a lesson or two from this intimidating giant about accepting our broken human condition.

-He willingly sits in the messy mud of life and does the hard work of examining the painful chapters of his story instead of running from them.

The thing that continually amazes me about "The Enforcer" is how different he is from the intimidating image prison culture has attached to him.

This giant human being is one of the funniest, most thoughtful, and most self-aware men I've ever met.

Some days I laugh so hard inside our sanctuary that my stomach physically aches.

To many people living life out in the free world...

"The Enforcer" is a LOST CAUSE.

A statistic.

A criminal.

A man destined to spend the rest of his life going in and out of the federal prison system.

BUT...

To those with eyes to see...

The man we call "The Enforcer" is an exceptional father.

A loyal friend.
A recovering felon.
A hurting son.
A LARGE & LOVING father who is currently being LOVED back to his true self.

He just needed permission to SEE THE REAL HIM hiding behind all the pain of his past.

And honestly...

watching God do that inside the walls of federal prison has been one of the greatest privileges of my entire life.

LOOK...

The consequences of "The Enforcer's" worst life decisions are real.

They matter.

And they must be dealt with using wisdom, accountability, discernment, and truth.

HOWEVER...

Even with an EXTREMELY complicated past...

God NEVER stopped chasing after His cherished son.

Not once.

From inside my federal prison cell now known as "The Sanctuary," I'm watching this once hostile convict slowly melt into his Heavenly Father's warm and welcoming embrace.

And honestly...

it's one of the most beautiful things I've ever witnessed.

Oooohhh...

that reminds me of something.

Just the other night, as I was finishing up Noél, Cambria, Willow, Lula, and Zion's goodnight letters, I felt a firm tap on my hunched-over shoulder.

Towering over me was my once terrifying buddy who was wearing a smile that warmed the prison walls that surrounded us.

He had this joy-filled smirk across his face because he wanted me to share the following words with my wonderful warrior wife Noél.

"Hey B...

please tell your wife that you all have a new member of your fam."

A Note From Noél

I...LOVE...MY...HUSBAND.

And I absolutely LOVE his God-given gift to listen on a level that makes a forgotten person actually feel seen.

Anybody who has had the privilege of processing a challenging season of life with Brett knows this to be true:

HE HEARS YOU.

He sees beyond your mistakes.

He sees beyond your pain.

He sees beyond the labels attached to your name.

And he is more than willing to lay down in the messy mud of life beside you while you find your footing again.

I have zero doubt that our newest family member, "The Enforcer," sensed Brett's humble heartbeat and celebrated the fact that he could finally share his complicated life story with another person without the fear of being judged, condemned, or defined by the worst decisions of his life.

Tears fill my eyes at the divine thought of God transforming Brett's cold cement prison cell into a holy and healing sanctuary. I mean c'mon!!! 

Think about that for a second...

A place built to punish.
A place built to isolate.
A place built to remind men of their failures.

Has somehow become a place where broken souls are finding healing.

Only God can do something like that. Absolutely INCREDIBLE!!!

God's abundant and unconditional LOVE is breathtaking.

YES...

"The Enforcer" is a man who carries a checkered past that created REAL consequences and a lengthy prison sentence.

The pain is real.
The mistakes are real.
The consequences are real.

BUT...

He is also an adored son of the Most High who yearns to melt into his Heavenly Father's warm embrace.

And I believe with all my heart that God has been chasing after this precious man for far longer than he realizes.

This surreal season of life has solidified one truth in my heart over and over and over again:

God longs to be reunited with His cherished children.

No matter how far they've wandered.
No matter how complicated their story has become.
No matter how many mistakes sit in their rearview mirror.

Like I've said many, many, many times before...

I HATE that my forever person is currently trapped behind a barbed wire fence.
I hate the distance.
I hate the missed moments.
I hate that our family has had to walk this road.

HOWEVER...

Our family's prison story has invited me, Cambria, Willow, Lula, Zion, and Brett to participate in God's abundant love story.

And honestly...

I'm beyond grateful for the opportunity.

Because every letter reminds me that God's grace is bigger than our failures.

His mercy is deeper than our shame.

And His love reaches places we could never reach on our own.

"The Enforcer" is finally recognizing his own greatness through God's expansive grace and mercy.

He is beginning to see what his Heavenly Father has seen all along.

A beloved son.
A devoted father.
A loyal friend.
A man worthy of redemption.

We welcome you into our FAM, my friend, and are delighted to cheer you forward into the tender, loving heart of Jesus Christ.
